Connecting wildlife to their habitat along I-90

For the first time, Washington is building a series of overpasses and underpasses along a highway to connect wildlife to their habitat. A 15-mile stretch of I-90 would have these “bridges” and “tunnels” so animals could find food, shelter and other animals, making this area “one of the world’s most wildlife-friendly highways.”

The result? Millions of dollars are coming in, and they may surpass last year’s record donations! Great job, everyone!

Support the local nonprofits who improve our lives — give BIG on May 5! During this one-day, online event, your donations go farther with The Seattle Foundation’s “stretch pool.” It’s a great way to say thank you to the organizations who help people in need and improve education, health, the environment, and more.

Social media will be huge during this event! Nonprofits are reaching out with a variety of social media tools, and people are encouraged to post about their giving. Using a creative tool, The Seattle Foundation has a tagboard wall set up. Followers also will receive special alerts on the giveBIG Facebook page.

Last year, giveBIG raised over $12 million for local nonprofits in one day! They hope that people will give even bigger this year.

Obtain free small business advice through SCORE

If you’re considering starting your own business or currently own a small business, you can obtain free advice from SCORE business mentors. As a nonprofit associated with the U.S. Small Business Administration, SCORE provides free training, counseling, and technical assistance, including on developing a business plan. To celebrate National Small Business Week, they are offering several workshops to help small businesses succeed.

When I first established Engage Northwest, I talked with SCORE mentors. They gave great advice and provided information for other business services that I may need, such as attorneys and accountants who specialize in serving small businesses.

I met with SCORE mentors in the Tacoma office at Bates Technical College. SCORE has other offices, too. They were free, helpful, and worth checking out.
