Engaging with community on Earth Day

Thank you, volunteers, for your time and effort on Earth Day and throughout the year! You make a difference in our community.

Many people say that making a difference in the community is the reason why they volunteer. Others may want to socialize with friends, learn new skills, or help advance a cause.

Earth Day and events throughout April are great times to encourage community involvement. People can team up with neighbors, family and friends to pull weeds, plant fruits and vegetables, pick up litter, and more. These activities help meet volunteers’ needs and an organization’s goals.

Make sure that volunteers feel appreciated – a simple thank you goes a long way. Other volunteer recognition could include t-shirts, free food, certificates, or acknowledgement in meetings, on a website, or in social media. Flat Anna to the rescue at Ocean Shores-lr

As you participate in Earth Day and similar events, remember to take photos. Or ask volunteers to take photos of themselves. These pictures can generate enthusiasm for the particular event, future events and even your organization. Consider holding a photo contest or sharing photos with a hashtag on social media. Pictures capture the community spirit! Enjoy the day, and thank you, volunteers!

Tips for small businesses on tax day

On this tax day, the good news is that small business owners and the self-employed have retirement options. The US Department of Labor identifies the features and advantages of several retirement plans, including the 401k, SEP IRA and SIMPLE IRA. In addition to the savings, the benefits of some small business retirement plans include a relatively easy and affordable setup and flexible contributions.

Some simple financial tips for small business owners: keep track of expenses as you go, make the most of deductions and contribute to your own retirement. You can still make 2014 contributions on April 15 and then plan for the year ahead and beyond.

Best wishes for continued success!

Presentation on storytelling at regional environmental conference

Annette Frahm and I will present on storytelling at a regional environmental conference in June. Last fall, we provided information about using stories to engage your audience at the Puget Sound Partnership’s ECO Net Summit. At this next conference, we’ll share information about storytelling through video and social media. More details to come!

Teamed up for a win: Seattle Streetcar

Photo of Seattle Streetcar signEngage Northwest teamed up with several communications firms on a Seattle Streetcar proposal, and our team was selected! The Streetcar project is exciting — it will connect over a dozen Seattle neighborhoods, and we’ll engage many diverse audiences.

The project includes communications on the:

  • start-up and ongoing operations of the First Hill and South Lake Union Streetcar lines.
  • design and construction of a streetcar extension on Broadway.
  • design and construction of the Center City line that will connect the streetcar network from Westlake to Pioneer Square.

I’m looking forward to collaborating with project team members and engaging the community on the Seattle Streetcar!
